SN Blog 12 – Form is temporary

I think it is safe to say following our draw in Madrid and our crushing win over Liverpool at Wembley we were feeling pretty good about where we were right now.  Players all playing well, squad showing depth with players coming in and out seamlessly.   Then, 2-0 up at half time while in second gear with a mix and match team seemed like all was good in the world.

What happened in the second half is up there with any bad performance you have ever seen Spurs have.  Losing a two goal lead and ending up being knocked out of the League Cup by West Ham at Wembley 3-2 …. there is no excuse.

We then had the news confirmed that Harry Kane, who was rested for West Ham, was actually not fit enough to play against Manchester United.  The game followed a similar pattern we have seen over the last few seasons when we are without Kane, we lack a certain penetration – that is not to say other players have not scored for us and we have not won games without Kane – or been poor with him (Swansea at Wembley) but against top sides and well organised defenders you need something extra which Kane obviously gives us, just ask Real Madrid who in the Spanish press waxed lyrical about Kane with one Madrid defender describing him as “to hot to handle”.

Any team that loses out on a world class player will not be as good as they are with him however Spurs actually against Manchester United for me were as good as their rivals – the only difference being one mistake at the back and Martial scored.  Fine margins.  At the other end not that before United struck we saw Dele Alli go through and I truly believe last season would have scored but as we have all seen this season he has struggled to replicate his form.

Form is temporary, class is permanent and I truly believe our team is class and for me a tough game at home to Madrid is actually the perfect fixture for us to get back on track.  They will come to Wembley to beat us, not sit back and that will give us space and allow our players to play.

I believe in our manager, in this team and I still believe we are on the right track.  Do you?
