SN Blog 28 – New Contract Time?

I am not quite sure when it happened but at some point over the last few years we as fans have become less supporters of a football team and more a group of people cheering on a business.

Can you imagine 30,000 people showing up outside IBM head offices once a week to cheer the staff on while they do their jobs… millions online all week debating if Tim in HR is going to sign his new contract, if Heather on reception will get a pay rise as other companies pay more – perhaps the debate will shift to how unfair it is that the Managing Director of IBM earns more than all those staff member we like so much!?

Poch

Of course this is a silly example but I hope it gave a few of you a laugh.  For whatever reason we as fans now are following all aspects of the business that is Tottenham Hotspur and that is largely due to the way the press have to fill their 24 hour news cycles and therefore look to create stories where in reality non exist.

Two seasons ago every player at Tottenham it seemed signed a new contract, the reason for this is that Daniel Levy rewarded the playing squad following a successful season and Champions League qualification.  Since then much has been made about our wage structure in comparison to other clubs but ignoring that it appears that we once again are about to go on a new contract spree.

Various reports in the media appearing to originate from agents indicate that the club have approached most of the first team squad with new contract offers and Daniel Levy is hoping to meet agents and have them all signed and announced, where possible, before the World Cup.

Hugo Lloris, Ben Davies, Kieran Trippier, Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela, Sonny and Harry Kane are all players that are said to have been approached with new pay deals which, if all signed, would see a large jump in the wages paid by Spurs however in line with the new improved revenue the club is enjoying from continued participation in the Champions League and anticipated increased ticket sales revenue from the new stadium.

Of course the biggest new deal that is being rumoured is actually for Mauricio Pochettino.  The Argentinian manager now has the best success rate of any non European manager in English football and this season, at the time of writing this,  he looks to have secured Champions League football again and still in with a chance at a trophy in the form of the FA Cup as he leads Spurs to a second Semi Final in two years.

Players will come, players will go however as long as we keep Pochettino I know the club will keep moving forward so for me that is the only and most important contract we get done.
