SN Blog 6 ‘Erik Lamela Mystery’

I am not really one for conspiracies.  I believe we landed on the moon, I do not believe there was a second gunman on the grassy knoll and I rarely wear a tin foil hat while watching the X-Files (the truth is out there I am told) HOWEVER I am starting to ask some questions about the Erik Lamela situation at Spurs.

Injured in a League Cup tie against Liverpool in October 2016 Lamela has not played or even kicked a ball since and nearly a full year on still no date can be given for a return.  The reason for this injury.  Hip problems.  Now hip issues can be terrible things, can lead to all sorts of problems with your spine – how you walk – certainly will effect how you run etc – turn – really would stop you from playing football.

Here is a question though; what is actually wrong?  We have never been given a diagnosis – which has in itself added to the mystery surrounding his absence.  Danny Rose had an ankle operation, there were details on the clubs official website…. Kane was out with an ankle injury, we were told which muscle was damaged even but with Lamela we have been told “hip issues” and nothing else.

Months went by last season with picture of him in training, or at least at the training ground and with “he is in training, he will hopefully be back soon” but then suddenly he showed up in Rome, at the training ground of his former club Roma.  The press ran stories of depression and mental health issues quickly shot down by the player himself in a series if tweets and Instagram posts – however the rumours were there.  Many fans, myself included felt this could be more of a clear explanation as to what is going on than the generic “hip issue” we had been told.

With the strong denial however and the club moving quickly to state he was there to continue his rehab and get a change of scenery the mystery continued.  Then, he needed surgery.  WHAT!?  No explanation again on what the injury actually was and no detail given, he simply underwent hip surgery.  Was it a replacement?  Six weeks later he had surgery on the other hip, we were told after this happened by the club it was planned and yet if planned why was there no mention of it during the previous news about his first surgery?  All very odd.

Now due to the length of time he has missed I have read theories ranging from drug issues to him simply faking injuries as he is a lazy git.  I am not sure the club would be able to keep quiet a drug issue, in this day and age where a player is filmed almost 24/7 when out and about it would seem unlikely.  As for Lamela being lazy, again I do not see it – he of all the players at the club under Pochettino thrived in the new combative approach to pressing from the front and getting stuck in.

For me, I fear, it is actually as boring as poor medical care at the club.  Lamela had a hip problem, he felt pain in his movement and couldn’t work out the problem.  Updates were vague as the club simply didnt know, scans didnt show any serious damage however then later more tests did show a problem and surgery was required.  Perhaps the second hip required the surgery due to over compensating for the first?

Regardless of what I think something has gone on which has added up to a £30m signing missing over a year of football.  Questions need to be asked internally as to how this has happened and we as fans of course would like to know more.

In his latest press conference Pochettino has said he fully expects Erik back soon.  He has worked with him and thinks he will be joining in first team training again soon.  If Erik can come back, like a new player he could provide a fantastic boost to the squad and team and provide the manager with another option over the season as we launch our assault on four trophies.
