Son: “We are stronger than everyone thinks.”

Son Heung-min says Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund proves they’ve been underestimated in the Champions League this season.

Following their failure to reach the knockout stages last season, Spurs were expected to struggle having been named in a much tougher group alongside the Bundesliga giants as well as the current holders Real Madrid this term.

However, the Lilywhites have remained undefeated thus far – beating Los Blancos 3-1 at Wembley along the way – sealing qualification to the knockout stages with two games to spare and have confirmed top spot in what pundits have labeled ‘the group of death’ with a game to spare after coming from behind to beat Dortmund last night.

Son, who netted the winning goal in the second half after Harry Kane had equalised, believes his side’s result in Germany highlights the strength within the squad – and also the complacency of their opponents when taking on Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

“A win always makes us happy,” Son told Spurs TV following last night’s win. “I think it was a difficult game, but we deserved to win.

“Everyone fought for the three points. In the first half we were 1-0 down, but we showed our mentality [after the break].

“We are stronger than everyone thinks and we deserved to win the game.”

Perhaps unfortunate not to be more of a regular starter having netted 21 goals across all competitions last season, the South Korean international benefited from Pochettino opting to rotate his side in the wake of the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal.

Starting in an advanced role behind the lone striker Kane at the Signal Iduna Stadium, Son proved once again as to why he’s an reliable option when called upon as he’s now weighed in with four goals and two assists in 17 appearances this season.
