Toby to get a double your money new deal?

Tottenham are to make the first moves in their bid to tie Toby Alderweireld down to a huge new deal.

They want Belgium international Alderweireld to be one of their highest-paid players, to ensure he is not lured away by clubs such as Chinese-backed Italian giants Inter Milan.

Defender Alderweireld, 28, is currently on around £50,000-a-week and wants parity with the likes of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, both of whom are on double that.

during the UEFA Champions League match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and AS Monaco FC at Wembley Stadium on September 14, 2016 in London, England.

His current contract has two years left to run, but Spurs have an option to extend it by another 12 months until 2020 — and they have no intention of allowing him to leave.

Signed on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid two years ago after shining on loan at Southampton, Alderweireld has established himself as arguably the best central defender in the Premier League.

He was one of the few senior players at White Hart Lane over the past season not to sign an enhanced contract.

Inter are among a number of clubs willing to significantly improve his current wages.

But talks were always due to begin this summer on ensuring he is adequately rewarded for his performances, and the removal of a £25million release clause that would become active in summer 2019.
