Walker & Pochettino relationship ‘untenable’

Kyle Walkers relationship with Mauricio Pochettino is described as ‘almost untenable’ after the England full-back was benched for two of Tottenham’s biggest games of the season.

Walker, who was axed for the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea and then Sunday’s North London derby win over Arsenal, is said to have been given no reason by his manager for being dropped.

Both Manchester clubs hold a serious interest in the long-serving 26-year-old right-back and Chelsea are also keen – although they know Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is always reluctant to do business with their London rivals.

Walker, regarded as one of the fittest and fastest players in the Premier League, has had no fitness concerns – and is dismayed at being overlooked in favour of Kieran Trippier for those two key fixtures.

Boss Pochettino has often rotated his full-backs but always previously employed Walker and left-back Danny Rose, when fit, for the club’s biggest league matches.

But Poch’s relationship with Walker has become increasingly strained during recent weeks.

While Walker is not a disruptive player, he can be outspoken – and the hardline Argentine manager is not believed to appreciate players voicing their opinions.

Walker signed a five-year contract worth £65,000 per week in September, leaving Levy in a strong bargaining position when City and United seek to do business this summer.

Both City boss Pep Guardiola and United’s Jose Mourinho are prioritising the signings of dynamic full-backs in the close season and Walker fits the bill.

Walker is now determined to leave – with Trippier set to be offered a new contract, giving him the chance to establish himself as Tottenham’s first-choice right-back.
