Alderweireld close to new deal?

Toby Alderweireld is close to sealing a new contract with Tottenham – with the deal also dropping his £25million release clause.

According to the Daily Mail, the Belgian’s current clause can be triggered by rival clubs in 2019, if Spurs take the option of extending his deal until the next year.

Now Spurs are keen to eradicate the clause altogether with a fresh five-year deal for the versatile defender. Alderweireld, 27, – who moved to White Hart Lane from Atletico Madrid in 2015 – would also earn £75,000-a-week.

Spurs have already extended the deals of their top talent with the likes of Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli all putting pen-to-paper on fresh deals.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino sees Alderweireld as an important player in his Spurs set-up and has helped them to second in the Premier League table and the relationship between the former Ajax star and Poch is a massive reason for him wanting to extend his stay in north London.

Alderweireld has previously spoken about the Argentinian and praised him as one of the best managers in the world.

He said: “The manager is very important. He has an idea how he wants us to play.

“Sometimes it’s a good result and sometimes a bad result — but he stands by his philosophy.

“He doesn’t want to change and it’s the way we want to get success, with good football and pressure.
