Alderweireld “very happy” to stay at Spurs another year

Toby Alderweireld is “very happy” to stay at Tottenham another year and says his performances prove it.

Spurs have triggered a clause in the Belgium international’s contract to extend the deal until 2020, but in doing so will activate a £25m release clause in the summer transfer window.

Only Harry Kane has featured more for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and the 29-year-old put in another stellar display as Spurs beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

“I’m very happy to stay another year,” Alderweireld said. “It was (a clause) in my contract and I’m happy Spurs gave me the confidence to stay another year.

“I’m only focused on things on the pitch. People can see every time I play that I give 100 per cent for this club – this is what I keep doing every time I play.

Sky Sports News understands Alderweireld was available for £25m last summer but no club made an approach.

It is understood Spurs have never had a formal approach from any club to sign the defender since he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2015 for £11.5m.
