‘Another Harry Kane does not exist’ – Postecoglou explains tactical tweak

Ange Postecoglou says it was not a question of replacing Harry Kane up front for Tottenham Hotspur but instead it was about “setting up a different way”.

Following Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer leaving for Bayern Munich in the summer, the ex-Celtic boss explained it was important to plot an alternative route to help the club succeed.

So far, with Tottenham top after eight games, it appears to be working out just fine.

“We know people come and go but when Harry left it was so significant for the club and for the team,” said Postecoglou. “He has been such a strong force for so long.

“I was looking at how to replace him and I’m not the sharpest but I knew that I could not replace like for like. Another Harry Kane does not exist.

“Instead, it gave an opportunity to try to play and set up in a different way. We have tried to take away the responsibility from the players and have them not worry about trying to fill the breach.”

Tottenham have shared the goals out in Kane’s wake, with Son Heung-min scoring a third of their 18 in the Premier League so far.

“We asked what would help us become a strong team with many attacking threats,” added Postecoglou.

“Hopefully, we can hurt teams in lots of different ways.”
