Conte says he does not want to push club over new contract

Tottenham Hotspur Antonio Conte has said that he does not want to push the club about his contract “because it’s not the right time”.
When the Italian joined Spurs in November last year he signed a contract until the summer of 2023 with the club announcing at the time that there was also an option to extend. football.london reported last week that despite suggestions last year that it was a two-way option that Conte and the club had to agree to extend, it is in fact Tottenham that hold the extra year option and they can choose to extend it whenever they wish.
After leading Spurs back into the Champions League with a fourth place finish last season and an unbeaten start to this campaign, there has even been talk that a now settled Conte could enter into discussions over a brand new bumper contract. The head coach shot down links with his former club Juventus on Thursday and admitted that he is very happy in N17.
Conte was asked whether the upcoming World Cup and the break involved for clubs presents a good opportunity for him and the club to discuss his contract.
“There doesn’t exist a right time. It could be tomorrow. It could be the last day of the Premier League season. The most important thing for me and the club is to understand we want to continue together, to go in the same direction,” he said. “This is the most important thing. Otherwise I don’t see a problem. I don’t see another situation.
“I said in the past, I didn’t need another contract to be sure to stay in a club. Also, for the club, it’s a good investment to have a coach like me and my staff. I think at the right time I will take the best decision. At this moment, I’m really happy. I don’t want to push the club about the situation because it’s not the right time. We have just started the season and we have a long time to live together and to understand, to continue to work together.”
When quizzed about his current contract and Spurs’ option to extend it, Conte reiterated that his contract is not the most important thing for him.
“There is not contract. There is not option. If the club and the manager want to work together they will continue to work together. If they don’t want to work together they finish. This is not important,” he explained. “The most important thing for me is that I’m really enjoying to work with Tottenham, with these players, especially, and the relationship with Daniel [Levy] and Fabio [Paratici] is good.
“I’m OK and I think the club is happy about this situation. They want to go and see. Now the most important thing for Tottenham’s present and Tottenham’s future is to get the best possible results, and we have to pay attention because after the international break some players come back not in perfect physical condition.”
