Eriksen confident of Pochettino stay

Christian Eriksen is confident Tottenham Hotspur will hold on to “Spurs man” Mauricio Pochettino despite rumours that the Argentine could be set to move across London to join Chelsea, according to The Mirror.

After leading Spurs into the Champions League for the third year running, Pochettino explained that his future will depend on significant investment this summer ahead of pivotal talks with chairman Daniel Levy.

Tottenham have trailed their rivals in terms of net transfer spend since the former Southampton boss arrived in north London in 2014 as they have primarily focused on funding their £850m new stadium, which is due to open a the beginning of next season.

Fellow Londoners Chelsea are keeping an eye on Pochettino with the Argentinian under consideration as a potential replacement for Antonio Conte, should the Italian leave this summer.

But playmaker Eriksen is not concerned about the doubts surrounding Pochettino’s future and has hinted that he believes the manager will stay.

“He showed he’s a Spurs man,” Eriksen explained. “He’s really important. You can see what he has achieved with this club.”

Meanwhile, Pochettino fears the new early transfer deadline could see foreign clubs destabilising Premier League A-listers this summer.

The Tottenham boss is confident of keeping star striker Harry Kane from the clutches of Real Madrid. But he believes other clubs could be left with unhappy players.

“That would be one of the concerns for everyone,” said Pochettino. “It is not the way they are going to behave – how they make the offer, or do anything.

“But every single player is going to react in a different way. It is a massive advantage for the rest of Europe.

“We will see how it works, but you have the risk that things will happen and it will be difficult for you to react. I don’t believe that it is a good idea to finish the transfer market before Europe does.”
