Chelsea host Tottenham this weekend in the pick of the Premier League fixtures.
If the match is just a fraction as exciting as the last time they met – the infamous ‘Battle of Stamford Bridge’ that ultimately ended Tottenham’s title hopes – fans will be in for a treat. In that 2-2 game the hosts came from two goals down, there were 12 yellow cards and the most incredible story in Premier League history was completed.
It’s a big game for…
Eden Hazard. It was in the previous meeting between these sides that Hazard reminded everyone of his incredible ability at the end of what had been a woeful season for the Belgian. He scored a cracking goal in that match and hasn’t slowed down since, being among the Blues’ standout players this term. Tottenham’s defence is the meanest in the Premier League – if Chelsea are to unlock it Hazard could be the key.
If you memorise one stat, memorise this…
Tottenham have not won at Stamford Bridge in 29 visits. That’s right – TWENTY-NINE visits. Their last win was back in 1990.
Last time they met…
That 2-2 draw that led to an almighty party in the home of Jamie Vardy. Spurs looked to be cruising when goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min had them two up at half-time. But then the visitors fell apart. Gary Cahill got Chelsea back into it and Hazard scored the equaliser after coming off the bench. Spurs lost their heads – only Hugo Lloris and Alderweireld left without getting booked. It was remarkable no-one was sent off.
With Tottenham unbeaten and Chelsea on a six-match winning streak, something has to give. Spurs were fortunate to get a late win against West Ham last weekend and were in Champions League action losing to Monaco on Tuesday. Meanwhile Chelsea have been in phenomenal form of late, have a tremendous record against Spurs at the Bridge and have been preparing all week. It points to a narrow Chelsea win.
