Moura sends Spurs through to Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Substitute Lucas Moura headed the winner as Tottenham beat Burnley at Turf Moor to book their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

It was a welcome victory for Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose side had lost their past two games.

An unmarked Moura, who replaced Bryan Gil in the first half, nodded Emerson Royal’s delivery into the ground and beyond Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Pope had made a superb save from Giovani lo Celso moments earlier.

Harry Kane, captaining the side, had a couple of slim chances in the first half, hooking wide when put through by Lo Celso before volleying a corner over the crossbar.

Burnley took the game to Spurs after Moura’s opener but the visitors, who made six changes following their defeat at West Ham, stood firm.

“Defensively we were spot on,” said Nuno. “It was tough, what we expected, but we played a good game, controlled the game, had good possession and created chances.

“It was a deserved win. It is about managing all situations, we are in the competition and did our job in a very nice way so we must congratulate our players.”

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Saturday.

Tottenham’s attention now turns to the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday while Burnley host Brentford on the same day.
