Jose Mourinho criticised his Tottenham players, claiming they are “too nice” after their 3-2 defeat to Wolves, but deemed the result “totally unfair”.
Spurs slipped to their third straight defeat in all competition as Wolves left north London with a win in which they twice came from behind.
Although Spurs didn’t create many clear-cut chances, Mourinho pointed towards Tottenham’s possession stats of 65 per cent as a reason to why the result was an “unfair” one.
“It was a good game – no one was happy with a draw,” he said.
“I believe we had more possession – we had more control than them. I think the result is totally unfair for us.”
Mourinho was keen to note Wolves’ ability to make tactical fouls at key points in the match. He made the point of Ruben Neves escaping a booking in the first minute for a clear attack-ending foul on Lucas Moura and Leander Dendoncker’s late yellow card for a deliberate pull back.
“That’s the way a team has to play football,” he said.
“They have the correct mentality and we were punished not just today but for quite a long time. We don’t have that aggression. I think we are too good, I think we are too nice. That was the only thing that made a difference.”
“It’s frustrating for me and the players,” Mourinho said.
“We have recovered points – the gap went to one and everything changed for us. It’s frustrating but we have to keep fighting like we did today. I can’t complain about the players’ fight and their spirits. I can complain about some physiological characteristics, that is something that is not easy to change.”
