Mourinho tipped to sell Ndombele

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been tipped to sell record signing Tanguy Ndombele this summer. The midfielder has struggled to impress since heading to north London from Lyon last summer.

Mourinho is said to be keen to axe the 23-year-old, however, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is refusing to give up on their £54m record signing.

Reports this week claimed Ndombele has told Mourinho he wants to leave Spurs due to the Special One’s playing style.

And former Leeds ace Noel Whelan says Mourinho must sell Ndombele this summer as Spurs won’t challenging for the Premier League title with him in their side.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s done nothing since he came to Tottenham, quite frankly.

“He had that debut where he scored a goal but after that, clearly, he doesn’t have the work rate that Jose Mourinho or the Premier League demands to become a special player.

“It’s different in France when you’re playing there, it’s a different style and different pace – not as good players there so you can stand out.

“Does he stand out in the Tottenham side in every game that he plays? Not really.

“There’s certain things that you demand and the first thing you look for is character and can you fit into a squad?”

“You’ve just gone and seen Liverpool win the championship with a tight-knit group, they’re all friends, they all work hard, in the midfield area there’s not one that doesn’t put themselves about.

“Now he’s shown he can’t do that and with those sort of players in the side, you’re not going to challenge for the Premier League title.”

A lot has been made of Ndombele’s future, with transfer expert Duncan Castles claiming Levy isn’t giving up on their record signing.

“My understanding is that [Ndombele] will remain at the club and basically Mourinho’s been told this player is of importance to Tottenham and they’re not prepared to take a loss on him,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.
