Hello and welcome to a new blog for the 2026/27 season where every Monday I will breakdown the latest results and happenings in the mad world of Tottenham; and yes more often than not this clubs causes me to have a breakdown so it works in two ways!
They say a picture can say one thousand words…
Here is a picture of Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi reacting to watching us ‘play’ on Saturday like he was going to vomit… a feeling I think many can relate.
Staying up was good… having a summer of change where the squad is overhauled to try and make sure we never have that problem again was exciting but its back to business now and sadly we were found out very quickly.
NOW! In reality I think we all knew it would not be an easy start as there has been a lot of change, with more player in attacking areas still arriving (Savinho and Marmoush this week) and so with five debuts in one game for the club there was always going to be some level of thing being disjointed and against a very good, well organised stable team it was always going to be a tough start.
That being said, we all of course wanted and expected a lot more than what we got. Now, I am no tactical genius and any insight I offer is purely from my opinion and reading smarter people than me offer their takes on what happened and one thing I saw with my own eyes and the stats agree with is that we had no out ball as be it our defenders or our midfielders passing it forward the ball simply did not stick, ever, which allowed Brentford to keep their press very high as even if we got the ball through their lines, which we did, a lot, sadly Richy proved again he is just not a number nine as he does not have the ability to hold up play which is what you need to move the ball up the pitch to break a team using a high press.
I do not like and nor will I ever scapegoat one player, we as a team were poor and looked like rabbits in the headlights from start to finish however there were little things there when I looked again, I mean REALLY had to look deep, that are good signs. A style of play that will yield better results when the players get to grips with it and better players are added in areas allowing it to work.
A key thing to remember after an awful start is that its not about how you start really but its about how you finish…. last season we opened with a3-0 win over Burnley and followed it with a 2-0 away win over Manchester City… does that matter knowing what came next? No… and I hope soon this start will not matter as we play the way I know we can and get the results our improved squad should be getting.
