Pochettino doesn’t trust defenders

BBC sport pundit Pat Nevin believes Pochettino doesn’t trust his back up centre backs.

Tottenham’s first choice pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are arguably the best duo in the league. So when rocked with an injury (like recently with Alderweireld) it’s understandable that the replacement won’t work quite as cohesively.

However, Nevin believes that Eric Dier and Kevin Wimmer are not trusted in that role. He questions if Dier is naturally suited at CB and that a lack of game time of Wimmer is proving an issue.

“I don’t think Mauricio Pochettino would say it out loud but when you lose Toby Alderweireld and you haven’t got Jan Vertonghen with him, you probably don’t trust what else is coming in,”

“Eric Dier is a good player but is he a natural centre-half? Kevin Wimmer hasn’t played a lot of games.

“Which one of them will do a job? Neither so get both of them in. They end up playing three at the back. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book.”

Carter-Vickers is another option, but he may be seen as too young to be playing in high importance games like the NLD.
