Pochettino: ‘He is perfect’

Mauricio Pochettino is full of praise for one midfielder – and it’s not an obvious one.

Pochettino often praises the likes of Alli, Eriksen, Wanyama and Dembele but young Enfield midfielder Harry Winks has caught the eye recently. Winks, fit again after recovering from an ankle injury, has impressed in two recent outings – against Barnsley in the league cup and APOEL in the Champions League.

Pochettino was quick to praise the youngster:

“For me he is the perfect midfielder, who can play box-to-box and as a holding midfielder,”

“He has the quality and the capacity to play, use the demands of the game and read it. He’s so clever and we are so happy that he’s started to feel better now, because he provides the team with qualities that we don’t have [in others].

“He is completely different to our other midfielders, like Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko. The qualities he can add to the team are completely different.

“He is one of the options we have and we celebrate that because the possibility to have him on the team provides us with more quality and more options to play in a different way.”

With midfield options limited due to injuries, Winks timely return has come at the right time and as the manager said – he offers something different to his teammates. It’s nice to see a local lad getting a chance and Pochettino is the right man to harness his abilities. If he keeps fit and gets game time this season – Winks could have a chance of breaking into the England squad ahead of the World Cup.
