Pochettino Press Conference – 18-08-2016

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes it is “only a question of time” before Christian Eriksen signs a new contract and commits to extending his stay at White Hart Lane.

Eriksen is entering the final two years of his deal and there have been reports that Juventus are interested in the Dane – but Pochettino is unconcerned by the situation.

“Always the players are involved in different things but they are very professional,” he said.

“We’re very happy with Christian and he’s very happy here and we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks. He’s got two years more on his contract and he’s happy here. I think it’s only a question of time to agree the new contract.”

Spurs suffered a blow this week as captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was ruled out for around a month due to a hamstring injury, leaving him with a race against time to be fit for Spurs’ first Champions League group game on September 13 or 14.

“We are confident [he will be ready] because it’s not a big issue, it’s a minor injury,” said Pochettino. “We’ll see what happens but we hope that he’ll arrive to be available for the Champions League.

“It’s always difficult when your captain is not on the pitch but we trust in Michel [Vorm]. He’s been doing well in pre-season. He was here from day one and he played a lot of friendly games and he’s ready to compete.

“He’s a keeper that has a lot of experience in the league and is an international. There is no doubt about his quality.”

Mousa Dembele will also miss Saturday’s home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday due to suspension, but Heung-Min Son is back in the squad after returning from the Olympics, where he represented South Korea.

“Son is available,” said Pochettino. “He arrived a little bit sad after the elimination in the quarter-finals [against Honduras]. We’ll see, we need to assess him tomorrow to see if he is in the squad or not.”

Pochettino once again refused to discuss Spurs’ interest in Marseille winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou but insists Clinton Njie has a role to play this season – unlike Nabil Bentaleb.

“They are still our players,” said the Argentine. “I was clear with you about Bentaleb – he’s not in my plans – but Clinton is in the squad and he’s in my plans.”
