BT Sports pundits Rio Ferdinand and then later BBC Match of the Day’s Gary Lineker and Martin Keown have questioned Jose Mourinho’s stance as it relates to his Tottenham squad “not having any firepower” following injuries to England captain Harry Kane and South Korea captain Son Heung-min.
The before mentioned men are the leading goal scores for Tottenham and have been for the last few seasons with over 75% of all the goals scored by the North London club coming from one of the two men. As such Jose Mourinho has referred to his squad being without them as like ‘going to war with a gun and no bullets..’ however following two defeats in the last week his take is being question by those in the media.
Ferdinand: “The excuse he has no attacking options is a nonsense. He has Dele, Bergwijn, Lucas and others there. If I was those players listening to him say that I would be asking him questions! Do you not rate me?! Then maybe a call to my agent to find me a new club!”
Rio was speaking following Spurs’ 2-1 defeat at Chelsea meaning their chances of a top four finish now look over for the season and was not alone in his criticism.
Keown: “I am not buying it. Spurs have more than enough. It is not about a lack of options its a lack of attacking coaching from the manager. He cannot coach a team to attack, he simply does not have that in him. He sets up to defend and hopes he has players of sufficient quality to score a goal or two. He is not an elite manager anymore, the game has moved on and evolved. Pochettino would have these same players showing at least some intent to attack or play football and the Spurs fans know that and that is why they are frustrated.”
