SN Blog 61 – We signed anyone yet?

Anyone who follows our Twitter account, which I manage, will know that every day for a little while now I have tweeted the question; “Have we signed anyone yet?” and the reason for this is purely … its funny.  I know, sound’s a laugh a minute but in reality its one of those eye roll jokes which the longer it goes the funnier it is getting.  However it appears Tottenham plan to spoil my fun soon and actually do the unthinkable and make a fairly early signing.

Now, we are Tottenham so we literally will believe it when we see it however if well placed journalists are to be believed we have agreed an outline deal with Lyon for the signing of Tanguy N’dombele.  What do you know about the Frenchman? …  Well if you are like me and rarely watch Ligue 1 it could be easy to feel fearful of this signing.  Our track record on signing players from the French league is shocking.

Add to that our record of signing players from the French league with an N prominent in their name is beyond shocking.  So here we are, about to smash our club record on a player that ticks both of those ‘must avoid’ boxes.

Of course there are key differences at Tottenham when it comes to recruitment now and Ndombele is a player that has been identified by Steve Hitchen, scouted for over a season and was identified by the team as a Dembele replacement in waiting.  He is just 22 years of age (turning 23 on the 28th Dec 2019) and is a dominant box to box midfielder.

So in theory… IF we sign this guy he will become a big player for us.  Here’s hoping there… however the purpose of this blog was not just to talk about him and his pending deal but also to talk about the summer madness that is the transfer window.  Every journalist (and I use that word loosely) knows that we are looking to recruit and be busy so therefore any player at any club around the world that an agent is trying to shift is being linked to us.

Who do you believe during this mad time?  I think its safe to say most Spurs fans now do not believe anything, blanket rule, until he is holding the shirt on a Spurs official post online its all just a rumour / made up press bull sh*t!

However each transfer window I, like many, cannot help but get sucked in on some stories.  The main reason I think that is the case is because some are 99% true.  An example:

“Christian Eriksen is close to a move to Real Madrid due to the Spanish club feeling he is better value than a deal for Paul Pogba from Manchester United.  Spurs hold an interest in a couple of Madrid players and therefore a package for cash + a player is likely.”

So, that story I have just posted above is logical.  We know he wants to leave.  We know Madrid is the team he wants and we know Madrid are looking for a creative midfielder.  We also know we have in the past had an interest in Isco and Ceballos, two players who seem surplus to requirements at the Bernabéu.

Now read it again.  It is opinion.  No quotes, no source, nothing actually new in that “story” at all however it was posted this morning and the site that did it has had over 900 comments alone based on it.

We made a decision when we set up Spurs News we would never post click bait, instead we post stories in full and quote the source at the bottom – only times you wont see a source is when its across so many news outlets would be a list likely longer than the article to put them all.

So when you read something here on the site or on our Facebook page you will always know where it has come from and you can build your own knowledge of who is full of it and who seems to have an actual grasp on what is happening.

… here’s a hint…. The Sun don’t and they do not care.  They get millions of media impressions for every nonsense piece they write and that makes them money.
