Tottenham til they kill me

I am not sure about anyone else but I feel like I rarely get to enjoy Tottenham winning games anymore.  We would be three goals up at Old Trafford, which we were… against ten men… which we were and part of me would still be convinced we are going to lose.

Yesterday (as I write this) we played Brighton at the Amex and the term “Game of Two Halves” has never been more true.

The first half was everything we had come to see over the last few games.  Good movement, crisp brave passing, creating chances and taking a couple of them.  One scare aside we dominated the first half and being 2-0 up was a fair reflection.

However a certain pundit… Berbatov kept saying something about consistency and ability to see out games and it formed some sort of PTSD in my mind where I realised I never relax, I never enjoy, I am always waiting for the team I love to throw it all away in a new and unique fashion.

The stats support this feeling.  I think even older Spurs fans will say that the Premier League era is our recent memory as a fandom now and so it serves as what Tottenham are.  In the Premier League era no club has throw away a two or more goal advantage to then lose than us.  Tottenham.  After yesterday we made it 10.  TEN!!  The nearest teams to us are now three behind us on this most unwelcome stat.

For some younger fans Premier League Tottenham is all they have ever known so for them the term Spursy is more associated with us than trophies.  You see youngsters back in the day we were a cup team of some note, we would lift at lease one trophy per decade and although we have never been a trophy laden TOP side we have also been amongst that – well in the Premier League years we are famous really only for one thing… being Spursy.

So here is the question I find my brain struggling to work out… How in the hell does this keep happening!?  Its different players, different coaches… all over years and years of football and yet Tottenham are still mentally as a team of football players unable to put together performances for full 90 mins.

The Pochettino team did, we had two maybe three seasons of seeing a team really put it together 90% of the time but that did not happen over night, season one was awful and season two started awful… so please know I am not slamming the current manager right now… what is baffling me is what happens when players join our club!?

Are they given a stadium tour… see the lovely training ground… told about the history… glory glory days that we want to bring back.. and then given a special secret talk from the owners that says “Now look, we will pay you good money but do not worry about trying that hard okay… like win a few, play well but never really go for it… walk around.. no one minds…”

As player after player, team after team, coach after coach is confronted with this same mentality issue. How is that even possible?  How can this be so ingrained in our club that is not culture.

Yesterday I saw a good first half and a second half that looked like they all took their minds off of the game.  “This is won, I wonder whats on Netflix later…” or focused on heading off to meet up with their international team mates…  I have no club but the focus vanished.

We can single out players, attack the manager… but something at the club is causing this to happen again and again over years and years and until someone works out what that is and fixes it.. we can spend billions, hire top coaches.. and we will never not be Spursy!
