Wanyama doubt for opening game of the season

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama is a major doubt for the opening of the season.

According to reports, the Kenyan captain was forced to return to London from Spurs’ tour of USA after a recurrence of knee injury. The same knee flared up in training and he missed Spurs’ 4-1 win over Roma in San Diego but club officials explained that his absence from the game was precautionary.

But Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the latest news on Wanyama after the Kenyan was forced off in penalty shoot-out defeat to Barcelona.

“Victor is in London because they need to see the doctor there. Is Victor’s injury the same as before? Yes.”

Wanyama was sidelined for four months last season and the development is another blow for the White Hart Lane club’s engine room. Tottenham are yet to make a signing in this transfer window but Pochettino remains relaxed about the situation.

Tottenham will face the Italian giants in their final tour game in Minneapolis on Wednesday but with their league opener at Newcastle less than a fortnight away, they are facing a midfield crisis.
