What is going wrong and what is going right?

Tottenham Hotspur continue to struggle, after losing against both RB Leipzig and Chelsea last week.

It goes without saying that Tottenham have had a rocky season with very few highs and many lows.

Since appointing Jose Mourinho as the new Head Coach back in November 2019, Spurs are still yet to show any signs of being anywhere near the same team they were just one year ago.

After gaining a hamstring injury on New Years Day against Southampton, the injury to talisman Harry Kane has played a crucial part in the Spurs’ downfall. The star is believed to remain out for the majority of the season, with hopes of a return in April.

When needing a replacement to fulfil Kane’s role of striker, Mourinho looked no further than to Son Heung-Min. A Spurs favourite, the South Korean showed his worth having scored four Premier League goals in the absence of the England striker.
Following this, disaster struck again for the club. Son was also ruled out with injury after sustaining a fractured arm during Tottenham’s fixture against Aston Villa, in which he had scored the last minute winner. Son Heung-Min has undergone surgery and now faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines.

With both Harry Kane and Son out for the majority of the season, this leaves Jose Mourinho with a tough decision on his hands. Who will replace the two and lead us upfront? Failing to sign a new striker in the January open window, there are very few options to choose from.

The obvious players to look at would be Dele Alli and Lucas Moura. However, the two have not shown in recent games a natural goal scoring ability that is vital. It has left fans wondering why Jose doesn’t give the chance to 18 year old Republic of Ireland international striker, Troy Parrott. Parrott made his debut appearance in the final five minutes of Tottenham’s game against Burnley which saw them win 5-0. When the final whistle blew, it saw a great gesture from boss Jose as he handed the match ball to Parrott. However, despite the obvious potential Mourinho can see in the young striker, he has already made his thoughts clear for this moment in time and said “My thoughts are that Troy Parrott is not ready”.

Looking at some positives on the current team, the majority of heads instantly turn to Steven Bergwijn.

Following the signing of the Dutch footballer from PSV Eindhoven, the player has been nothing less than impressive. Scoring on his debut for the club, Bergwijn has quickly won the hearts of many Spurs fans and has fitted in very well with his teammates.

Another stand out player for Tottenham is Giovani Lo Celso. With his creative brain and naturally gifted moves, Lo Celso is already looking like the new Christian Eriksen that the team had been missing for a long time. He is constantly thinking and creating clever ways to get the ball up the field and into the box. It sounds simple, but Spurs had been lacking this sort of creativity for quite a while. Lo Celso is definitely key to the squad and is sure to keep on progressing and producing the quality Spurs need to push forward.

The likelihood of Spurs finishing inside the top 4 or 5 is unclear. Although there is one thing that is clear and that is Jose Mourinho does not give up without a fight – and neither do Tottenham Hotspur!
