Alderweireld happy to be back in the Spurs first team

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld claims he never wanted to leave the club in the summer.

The Belgian, who was linked with a move to Manchester United, has less than a year remaining on his current deal at Spurs and he has the option to extend it by a year.

His deal also includes a £25million release clause but Alderweireld insists he’s just happy to be back in the Spurs first team.

“Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham,” he said.

“That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.

“I just try to help Tottenham as best I can with my qualities. Regarding my future, everything that was said in the press was not right all the time.”

After being an unused substitute for Spurs’ opening weekend victory over Newcastle. Alderweireld has fought his way back into the fold – starting the last three games for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
