On Wednesday night Christian Eriksen was presented the chance to score his first Tottenham hat-trick. The Danish midfielder, captain for the night, had scored 2 goals already when defender Kieran Trippier was fouled in the area.
Eriksen – as captain and on a hat trick – had every right to step up and slot the penalty in for 3… Unselfishly, Eriksen let new striker Vincent Janssen and he explained why:
“I did think about taking it but I think I saw on Vincent’s face and his body language that he really wanted it and you can feel for a striker,” he told the Mail. “And it is not as important for me with two or three goals. I was happy for him also and he did say thank you also, so it was a good one.
“He had a lot of shots in the first half and I think normally he would score. I think if you give him a penalty there is no better chance for a striker to score an easy goal.”
Another example of Tottenham players showing a real team spirit. Well done Eriksen and hopefully it’s the first of many for Janssen.
