Vincent Janssen insists he is ready stand-in for the injured Harry Kane at Tottenham after scoring his first goal for the club.
The £17million striker, signed from AZ Alkmaar after topping the Dutch goal charts last season, finally opened his Spurs account with a penalty in their 5-0 EFL Cup demolition of Gillingham on Wednesday night.
He is now set for a run in Mauricio Pochettino’s team while Kane recovers from the ankle injury that saw him carried off on a stretcher in their 1-0 win over Sunderland on Sunday.
Janssen said: “Am I ready for that responsibility? Yeah, of course. I am ready to play.
“I feel bad for Harry but if he is fit I want to play with him. He is a very good player.”
Janssen was desperate to score against Gillingham having failed to find the target in his first six Spurs outings.
Janssen, who netted 27 goals in 34 games in the Eredivisie last term, added: “It is nice to get the first goal but it is not the most important thing because I have enough confidence and if I hadn’t scored there, I was sure I would score in the next game.
“It was nice to score the first one but it was not such a big issue.”
