Christian Eriksen has told Danish newspaper BT he is happy at Spurs and targeting trophies, despite fresh links to Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Eriksen signed a new contract until 2020 last season and the midfielder said of the links: “To be honest, I don’t think like that. You play football in the present, but you have your dreams as well. Dreaming is one thing, but you don’t know what’s realistic until you see it on the table.Right now I think most players are very satisfied being at Tottenham, and so am I.”
Eriksen joined us from Ajax in summer 2013 but has yet to win a trophyzThe Denmark international helped us into the FA Cup semifinal with a double in the 3-0 win at Swansea on Saturday and is confident we can win a trophy soon.
“Yes, I think so if you think about where Tottenham was when I came compared to where we are today,”: he said.”Now people view us as title contenders whereas before we had to fight to get to the top four and even into the top six.
“We may have to build ourselves up toward winning a trophy and we are on the right path. Then we have to see if there is anything at the end.
He added: “I think all footballers would love to win the Premier League or the Champions League or the FA Cup. I think most people just want to win some trophies. You can try to ask Kasper [Schmeichel, the Denmark goalkeeper] what it was like for him after winning the Premier League [with Leicester].
He added: “I think it was a good feeling. We have been close in the last couple of seasons, but this season we haven’t been close at all. Nevertheless, we’ve still had a very positive season so far.”
Age Hareide, Eriksen’s international coach, has said he believes our Number 23 could play for any club in the world and is a better player than Luka Modric was when the Croatia international joined Real from Spurs in 2012.
“I think he’s the kind of person who can adapt to anything,” the article quotes Hareide saying. “Give him a ball and it will speak for him, because he gets even better from playing with even better players. If you compare him to the central players in Real Madrid and Barcelona, Christian isn’t behind any of them. Modric also came from Tottenham. He wasn’t as good as Christian.
He added: “He’s ready to take another step, but he’s also had a fantastic development under [Mauricio] Pochettino at Tottenham.Tottenham actually play really good football. And we also look at how Tottenham use Eriksen. They play a lot of passes through the middle and that suits Christian.
“Now they’re getting a new stadium at Tottenham too, so why wouldn’t he stay in London?”
