Lucas: I want to win at Spurs

Lucas Moura wants to “conquer” at Tottenham after a tough final few months with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian has hit the ground running at Spurs, scoring his first goal in a 2-2 draw with Rochdale in the FA Cup 12 days ago before playing a key role in three of Tottenham’s six in the fifth-round replay on Wednesday.

The game was played in a near-blizzard as Storm Emma, dubbed the ‘beast from the east’, continued to batter the UK, playing conditions which Lucas had rarely experienced before.

Lucas arrived from the Ligue 1 giants on Deadline Day in a cut-price deal worth around £25 million after failing to start a game for PSG this season.

“It’s very difficult,” he told ESPN Brazil. “First time I played with so much snow like that. Even more as Brazilian, used to heat, it’s very difficult. My finger was almost falling off!

“But it was cool, I think it was an important result. We have the goal of winning this cup. And even more that I just arrived, so I want to win, I want to conquer, I want to make my story here.”

He added: “[My start] also has to do with the reception I had here. They all welcomed me with open arms. Both the technical staff and the players. So that made me very comfortable, very happy about it. The most important thing is that I am very happy.

“I spent a very difficult seven months at PSG, I was not playing, I was training and going home, so it’s difficult for a player.

“So when that opportunity to play in a big team like Tottenham came, and when I got here I saw the facilities and the players, it got me very excited. So that’s how I said, very happy about it.”

Wednesday’s 6-1 win was marred by confusion and chaos with the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), with Spurs having two goals disallowed, one being a penalty after a free-kick was initially awarded.

Boos rang out from fans inside Wembley during the minutes-long delays and Lucas, experiencing the new technology for the first time, was unimpressed by the interruptions.

“To be honest, for me, I think it was terrible,” he said. “For two reasons: firstly because it stops the game all the time. And second because of the cold. We have to wait, each stop had three, four minutes.”

“I think it was very confusing there, the referee. Anyway, this first impression was not good. I think it was the first game I played with this technology. And I think it was not cool. I think it stops the game a lot, it ties it up a lot.”
