Mourinho insists it is not up to him whether Campos joins Spurs

Jose Mourinho insists it will not be his decision whether Luis Campos follows him into Tottenham as director of football.

Campos has been linked with a move to Spurs amid a growing feeling he is preparing to leave his role as sporting director at Lille at the end of the season.

The 55-year-old Portuguese is a close friend of Mourinho and they have worked together in the past, most recently at Real Madrid.

‘Luis Campos is a big friend of mine,’ said the Spurs head coach. ‘Luis Campos worked with me at Real Madrid.

‘Luis Campos is doing his great career with Monaco and Lille. And that’s it.

‘I work at Tottenham with the structure that the club wants me to work.’

Mourinho plundered Lille for assistant Joao Sacramento and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos when he was appointed as successor to Mauricio Pochettino last month.

Spurs have employed various individuals in this type of role since David Pleat was named director of football in 1998.

Chairman Daniel Levy appointed Franco Baldini and Paul Mitchell into similar executive positions with slightly different parameters and titles but the role was phased out at the behest of Pochettino upon Mitchell’s exit in 2016.

Mitchell’s replacement was Steve Hitchen who works more as a traditional chief scout but with Pochettino gone there have been some discussions about its possible reintroduction.

Campos created a strong reputation for identifying young talent while working at Monaco, helping them to build the team which won the French title in 2017 with players such as Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy.

He has continued to impress at Lille as they returned to the Champions League and has other admirers including Manchester United who have been considering the idea of a director of football for some time.
