Tottenham Women have completed the signing of Drew Spence from Chelsea this summer.
Press release below:
The experienced midfielder has signed a contract with us until 2024 with the option to extend for another year.
The 29-year-old has spent her entire career with fellow Women’s Super League side Chelsea, progressing through the ranks before making her senior debut in 2009.
The Jamaica international went on to enjoy a glittering career with the Blues, making 238 appearances and scoring 50 goals over 14 years of service, making her the club’s longest-serving player.
During her time in west London, Spence helped Emma Hayes’ side win 11 major trophies. She became a champion of England five times, an FA Cup winner three times, and has two Continental Cup trophies and one Community Shield under her belt.
Equally prolific on the international stage, the versatile midfielder’s impressive club form was rewarded with a senior England debut at the Yongchuan International Tournament in October, 2015.
Last year, Spence switched allegiances and earned her first cap for the Jamaica national team in October. Her quality and experience was a vital part of their qualification for the CONCACAF tournament next month with four places at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on offer for the best-performing teams.
Drew said: “I’m really excited. It’s a new chapter for me. I’ve seen how much the team has progressed over the past few seasons, challenging teams at the top, so it’s the right move for me and somewhere where I can bring all my experience. I know how to win titles, I know what it’s like to be in a dressing room where there is a winning mentality every day and hopefully that’s something I can bring here.”
Rehanne Skinner, Head Coach, added: “Drew is a fantastic addition to the squad we are building. Her achievements in the WSL have been significant, having been involved in the league since the start in 2011. She brings a huge amount of experience and understanding of winning, having been a part of 11 trophy-winning teams. As a midfielder, Drew is creative, tenacious and capable of unlocking defences in a number of ways, and will be an asset to the team.”
