Tottenham’s future ‘rosy’ according to former star

Tottenham’s future is “extremely rosy” under Mauricio Pochettino, believes former Spurs star Ossie Ardiles.

There was disappointment for Pochettino’s side in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday as they lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Wembley.

That defeat means Spurs’ wait for a trophy will stretch into an 11th season, with their last piece of silverware coming in 2008 when they won the League Cup.

But Ardiles insists the team are still progressing under Pochettino and feels Spurs fans have plenty of reasons to feel optimistic.

“We have to be very, very positive about what has happened this season,” Ardiles told Sky Sports News. “It has been, I would say, a great season.

“We got to the semi-final of the FA Cup. We did extremely well in the Champions League, beating Real Madrid. We lost against Juventus but we probably deserved better.

“We are probably qualified for the Champions League next season. I think it has been a wonderful season.”

Spurs are currently fourth in the Premier League table, five points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, and need eight points from their remaining four matches to be guaranteed Champions League football for a third consecutive season.

Ardiles believes Pochettino deserves credit for that and hopes his fellow Argentine stays with the club for a “very long, long time”.

“Mauricio has transformed the club from where it was three or four years ago,” Ardiles said. “We used to be one of the rest of the big guys.

“Now we are one of the big guys. We are fighting all the time. We are one of the best teams. If you put the last three seasons together in terms of points, we probably have more points than anybody else.

“This season looked like it was going to be very, very difficult because we are playing at Wembley but I would say we passed that test with flying colours.

“Next year we will be in the new stadium so the future is extremely rosy for Spurs.

“I am not in the brigade that somehow we have to win something. We have to carry on doing the right things and trophies will eventually come.
