Redknapp: Dier for England captain

SkySports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Eric Dier should be the next England captain.

Dier will replace Rooney in tonight’s game for England vs Slovenia and Redknapp has urged new England manager Gareth Southgate to name Dier as long term captain.

Southgate has chosen Jordan Henderson to captain the side in Rooney’s absence but Redknapp believes the burden of captaining both club and country is too much – similar to Rooney & Gerrard in recent years. In his interview with the Mail Redknapp said:

“I would say Eric Dier (for England captain), although my only worry is that he is facing a battle with Victor Wanyama for his place at Tottenham,”

“The England captain needs to be in the form of his life for his club.”

It’s a valid point – Dier and Wanyama are currently fighting each other for a Tottenham first team place and with Dier only recently returning from injury – Wanyama appears to be in the driving seat. However, Dier would make an outstanding captain and when fully fit I fully expect him to win back his place in the side.

Well said Jamie Redknapp. To Dier is to do.
