Rumours today suggest that Tottenham are looking at signing a new centre back. Pochettino is keen to further strengthen his already impressive defence with the signing of Alfie Mawson or Ben Gibson. This comes after continued speculation that Kevin Wimmer is set to leave the club.
Mawson and Gibson both received plaudits for their performances last season with Swansea and Middlesbrough. It seems that Pochettino is after a young centre back with Premier League experience, potentially to play in a back three.
With Eric Dier keen to play a holding role in midfield, a new defender would slip in alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
The signing of either player would also add another English player to the squad. Prices of “homegrown” players are often highly inflated. Michael Keane recently moved to Everton for £25m and Harry Maguire to Leicester for £17.5m. Mawson and Gibson can therefore be expected to demand around £20m.
